Episcopal Cursillo in the Diocese of Virginia Lay Director's Comments
David vanEsselstyn
Lay Director 2004
Episcopal Cursillo in the Diocese of Virginia
July 2004
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I pray that your summer is a time of family and personal “recharging”. I also pray that we are moving together as a community in Christ, building the community and building those friendships that we can nurture and take to our Lord.
If you recall from my first note I sent out in January, I asked for your help in rebuilding Cursillo in the diocese. I asked you to recommit yourselves to the Cursillo Method and to join the Secretariat in making this a strong Christian witness in our parishes and in the diocese. To that end, I asked for your support when we began to call for team members for the only candidate weekend we are going to have in 2004. That weekend’s core team is formed and waiting to join with the rest of those of you called to serve this October 14th-17th. Now is the time to say a resounding “YES!” when Elaine Kallio calls you. If she hasn’t yet called you and you have a desire to serve on this weekend, call her. If we are not able to field a team for this one weekend, I fear that we may be seeing the end of Cursillo in the Diocese of Virginia. Elaine has called over 100 names and has not yet (11 July) received any positive responses. The choice of whether Cursillo continues or not is not mine or the Secretariat’s alone…it is yours also.
Your Secretariat is moving ahead with assembling articles for the upcoming newsletter. Alice Lees is working on the layout and we hope to have it to you at the end of the summer. That’s right, a newsletter…in the mail, via email, and on the web site! Pretty amazing isn’t it?
I would also like to remind you all that I am available to come to your parishes any time I am not traveling out of the area for work. I and other members of the secretariat have volunteered to be available to come and talk with your entire congregation or smaller groups about Cursillo and what is can and does do for us.
As always, I ask for your prayers for each other, for your parishes, for the diocese, and for the greater Church. These are not easy times to be a Christian, let alone and Episcopalian. Cursillo provides us a way to remain focused on our calling as Christians and to bring the real Glory of God to our friends and neighbors. Blessings to you all and remember, we are in this adventure together.
In His laughter and service,
David
